A shout out to the Mason Middle School in Tacoma and Ms. Erica’s 6th grade class. They took the responsibility to incubate some big green emu eggs from our farm this spring as part of their Biology study. As you know from reading our Facebook posts these past months, hatching emus isn’t easy. They were successful and helped welcome a new wobbly head into the world. This is “Jake”, who has come back to the farm after the special care he received from all the students. They learned all about emus and we are very proud!!
Power outage-tragedy averted.

We are breathing a HUGE sigh of relief!!! We had a bit of a scare during the last storm and power outage—a tripped breaker meant our incubators got dangerously cold and we were fairly certain (well, Tony was absolutely certain) we had lost all of our eggs in the incubators—they were full up with 9 trays of eggs so we were almost in tears!!!! Heartbreaking days. But… we just kept turning them and watching and hoping against hope… and OH MY GOODNESS—they have started to hatch. So…prayers answered and I am so thankful for it!!! Just love these little wobbly...
Friday (er Sat., no Sunday) Fun Emu Fact.

Raising emus is, at times, great fun and as we learned last week, also truly heartbreaking. But living in rural Lewis County has also allowed our family to grow and learn so much more. Whether it is harvesting honey (our first year we were overrun by bees from the hive coming to take their honey back !!), making apple cider (a sticky job), or growing and preserving our own food for winter (you can grow too much kale), the days are never dull. Thank you to our customers for 12 years of fun. Looking forward to many, many more....

We are all finished with markets this season and settling in to a lovely fall. Thank you to everyone that came by to say hi at the Chehalis, Centralia, Tumwater, and Astoria markets. All our products are available online except our emu meat and we are working this fall to get our shipping sorted out so we can sell that online as well. In the meantime, if you are looking for meat, give us a call--we have finished processing and our freezers are full.
